Dear Cutting Edge Alums (Petrology and Geochemistry),
I'd like to call your attention to a new web-based learning module on
Teaching Phase Equilibria.
http://serc.carleton.edu/research_education/equilibria/index.html.
This webpage is the product of a workshop that convened a group of
colleagues who routinely teach aspects of phase equilibria in their own
mineralogy, petrology and geochemistry courses. The website includes
modules on the Phase Rule, binary and ternary igneous phase diagrams, PT
diagrams and pseudosections, balancing metamorphic reactions,
introduction to thermodynamics, Gibbs Free Energy, the Clapeyron
equation, activity models, Schreinemakers, experimental petrology,
classical geothermobarometry, PTt paths, and tutorials and worked
examples of advanced modeling programs such as ThermoCalc, Perplex, TWQ
and Melts.
In creating these webpages our goal was to: 1) distil the fundamental
concepts into accessible learning units for students; 2) provide
instructors (many of whom must teach phase equilibria "out of field")
with access to teaching activities and supporting print and web-based
resources, and 3) develop tutorials and worked examples using modern
thermodynamic modeling programs (ThermoCalc, Melts, TWQ, PERPLEX). This
site is not intended to be a comprehensive course in chemical
thermodynamics-rather it will hopefully provide a reasonable point of
entry for students to become familiar with the basic concepts and
applications of phase equilibria in the geosciences. The various units
may be used for introductory mineralogy (e.g. Phase Rule), upper
division courses for majors (e.g. quantitative use of phase diagrams or
thermobarometry), or graduate courses (e.g. exercises using modeling
programs).
We welcome feedback and additional contributions to the resources on
this site. Please forward suggestions of additional URLs that you use
in your own instructional activities to me: mogk at montana.edu. If you
have problem sets or other teaching activities related to these topics,
please use our on-line Contribute a Resource form:
http://serc.carleton.edu/research_education/equilibria/contributeteachin
g.html to upload these documents (and we ask that you fill out the form
that more completely describes the nature of this activity). This
project was developed as part of the DLESE Community Services Center,
with funding from the National Science Foundation (EAR 03-06708). Thanks
to Dex Perkins for assuming a huge amount of the writing/editing
responsibilities and to the "Phase Equilibria Writing Group" for sharing
their experience and teaching resources!
Best to all, and Rock On!
