Petrology Workshop listserv members,

On the theme of "continuing education" (2 years after the workshop!), for
those of you who have maintained an interest in Montana and Yellowstone
geology, there is a new web resource that may be of interest to you. The
first installment of a searchable, online list of educationally-useful
geologic field guides and road logs for Montana and the Yellowstone region
is now part of the SERC website. Here's the link...

http://serc.carleton.edu/research_education/mtroadlogs/index.html

Igneous and metamorphic rocks make a pretty strong showing in the database;
the Stillwater complex, Yellowstone, the Beartooth Highway, and the cental
MT alkalic province are all featured prominently. This site is meant as a
model of what can be done to make the "gray literature" of field guides more
accessible and useful for geoscience instruction. It will probably never be
a complete list of ALL published field guides in Montana, but we do envision
this collection growing as people submit their favorite field guides to the
collection.

If you would like to add to our searchable collections of
educationally-useful geologic field guides or field-based exercises for this
region, we would be happy to work with you to share your ideas with a larger
audience on this website. For those of you from other parts of the country,
we would encourage you to think about ways to put together similar databases
for your own states or regions.
