Greetings to the Teaching Oceanography Workshoppers.

We're very much looking foreward to seeing everyone at the Teaching
About the Ocean System Using New Research Techniques: Data, Models and
Visualization workshop that is fast approaching. We're moving ahead
with plans for the workshop, and will be using this listserv to keep you
posted. Here are a few items for your immediate attention:

1. Please check out the participant list on the website
(http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/ocean05/participant.html)--this
is a really interesting and diverse group of participants. We need to
submit the housing roster to the Watertown Hotel in the near future, so
please let us know if you have a preference for roommates. You can send
this request directly to my assistant, Karin Kirk at kkirk at montana.edu.
It turns out there is a major bike race in the area the weekend of our
workshop and housing is very tight in the U. Washington District. So,
please use your roommate preference as an opportunity to get
reacquainted with an old friend or to meet someone new. We'll need to
have your responses by next Wednesday, June 1.

Also, Matt Horrigan, San Francisco State University, was wondering if
anyone would be interested in car-pooling from the Bay area. Perhaps
others might also be interested in arranging shared rides if you're
traveling from the same region.

2. We're rounding out the program now. Please let us know if there is a
particular instructional activity, animation, software package, data
set, etc. that you would particularly like to demonstrate (e.g.
hands-on) or present to the group. The application forms you sent in
previously show that there is an amazing breadth of resources you've
already developed and it would be great if you would be willing to share
these with the group. Could you take just a minute and send me a note
(mogk at montana.edu) with a brief description of your
resource/activity/software/...etc., and if there are any particular
technical requirements? We'll make sure these are included in the
program as either a demonstration or presentation.

3. In preparation for the workshop, it would be good to start an
informal discussion on this listserv. What are your expectations for
the workshop? What are the big issues or opportunities? What types of
resources or services would help you in your own teaching and research?
So, please use this listserv as a forum to post queries, share ideas,
and to generally prepare for the workshop. As issues and ideas arise,
these will also help us formulate the program.

Thanks to all for your interest in the Teaching Oceanography workshop.
Looking forward to seeing everyone in Seattle in early July.
Best to all,
Dave Mogk
