Hello folks,
Apologies to those of you who I have already emailed about one or both of
these announcements, but Dave reminded me that this listserv is a good way
to communicate to the whole group.

I have learned that we have a few spaces available for students in our fall
SEA Semester programs. I know that it is very late for most students to
consider an off-campus program; however, because I hate to see this
opportunity go by I am passing word to those who have contact with college
students or recent grads that might be interested in participating in our
program. We accept students of all majors and with widely varying
backgrounds in oceanography. In fact, for this fall we are developing an
upper-level oceanography course for more advanced science or geosciences
students, in addition to teaching our traditional introductory course.
While all students will continue to participate in an oceanography research
project, we hope the advanced course will challenge those students to carry
out more focused and in-depth projects.

Secondly, I know many of you expressed a desire to gain sea-going research
experience yourselves. I spoke to our Dean, Paul Joyce (pjoyce at sea.edu),
and he is enthusiastic about the opportunity to bring visiting scientists to
sea for one or more legs of a SEA Semester (a leg is typically two weeks
long). All that we ask is that you provide your own travel to/from the
ship, and that you are willing to work with the students, contributing your
expertise to the program in some way. If you think you might want to pursue
this opportunity, or if you would like more information, please feel free to
contact me or Paul Joyce.

The schedules for the upcoming fall semesters, for potential students or
visiting scientists, are as follows:

Fall I: August 29 to October 6 on shore, October 13 to November 21 at sea

*	The Trip South, Class 201A, sailing from Woods Hole, MA to St. Croix
*	The Sea of Cortez Cruise, Class 201P, sailing from San Diego, CA to
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Fall II: October 11 to November 18 on shore, November 27 to January 8 at
sea

*	Open Ocean Adventure, Class 202P, sailing from Puerto Vallarta,
Mexico to Tahiti

It was a pleasure meeting you all at the workshop, and many thanks for your
help in extending the SEA Semester opportunity to more students. And I hope
to see some of you aboard one of our ships!

Regards,
Kara
