Greetings Health Folks: Wishing all of you a happy new year, and I hope
you're all looking forward to a great winter term.<br>
<br>
Here are a few updates regarding Geology and Human Health:<br>
<ul>
<li>First, thanks to all who planned and contributed to the Pardee symposium
and theme sessions at the GSA Annual meeting. By all accounts both events
were a tremendous success.</li>
<li>I'd like to encourage you all to continue to contribute to the resource
collections on the workshop webpage: <a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/health04/index.html">http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/health04/index.html</a>
</li>
</ul>
Thanks to Yan Zheng for starting the year with a new submission to the activity
collection. We really need to build this part of the collection, and I'm
sure you all have one or two great exercises that you can contribute. You
can contribute a teaching activity, URL, or other reference at: <a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/health04/contribute.html">http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/health04/contribute.html</a><br>
<ul>
<li>Please use this listserv! This provides a great forum for floating
ideas, querying colleagues, asking for specific information, etc. Please
share with the group what you're thinking about and doing these days. </li>
<li>I'll start: I'm teaching Environmental Geology for non-majors this
term, and the sub-theme of this course will be Geology and Human health.
We will be doing a series of debates in class on health-related issues (e.g.
asbestos at Libbey, MT). I'll encourage my students to regularly use the
resources on the webpage. We will also do a campus-wide poster session on
Geology and Human Health (similar format to GSA posters). Students will
be expected to use the resources that are available on the webpage, and also
to discover and contribute additional resources on the topics of their choice.
Also, one optional class activity will be to read one of the popular books
from the on-line "Bookshelf" and prepare a book review. </li>
<li>The PIs for the On the Cutting Edge program are beginning to gear up
to write the next proposal to support this series. Please take a few moments
and complete the Follow-On survey at: <a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/survey.html">http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/survey.html</a>
We need to collect this information to demonstrate that our workshops have
had continuing impacts on faculty and students. </li>
<li>Here's a recent article of interest: Toxic Breast Milk? by Florence
Williams in the January 9, 2005 issue of the New York Times (Sunday) Magazine.</li>
<li>It would be great if someone would volunteer to monitor the ensuing
health issues related to the recent tsunami tragedy, and help build collections
of URLs, references, etc. on this topic. In the midst of this tragedy we
have a global teachable moment that we really must take advantage of.<br>
</li>
</ul>
Wishing you all a year of (Geology and) Health and happiness. Write home
once in awhile via the listserv!<br>
cheers,<br>
Dave Mogk<br>
