From scp2 at Lehigh.EDU Mon Jan 16 16:15:51 2006 From: scp2 at Lehigh.EDU (Steve Peters) Date: Mon, 16 Jan 2006 19:15:51 -0500 Subject: [Healthwksp] Geology and Human Health Course Message-ID: <6082ae2d42e8ec7e8a81d1c5971ae5c6@lehigh.edu> Hello fellow participants... One of the goals I had for the workshop was to offer a course entitled "Geology and Human Health." Well, it starts tomorrow. I decided to use Selinus's new book entitled Medical Geology, which looks pretty good. The audience is primarily graduate students, an interesting mix of folks with geology, biology, botany, ecology and engineering backgrounds. I've looked through the workshop webpage for useful thoughts etc. I could use your input in one area: I'd sure love to have the students tackle a problem that will result in a written contribution - preferably publishable of course. I was thinking of geographic reanalysis of existing datasets to uncover new trends or more firmly establish some hypothesized connections. If you have any ideas or leads, I would like to hear about them. If you have any other suggestions or would like to be kept abreast of how it proceeds, drop me a line. You might want to check out the website we developed on Environmental Health Risk Assessment: http://serc.carleton.edu/research_education/healthrisk/index.html This site presents a tutorial on how to access and interpret data from a number of on-line sources, e.g. Toxic Release Inventory, etc. We offer one example based on our hometown here in Bozeman. It would be great if you could a) critique this site and offer suggestions for improvement, and b) have your class do environmental assessments of their own hometown. If you develop related activities, we'd like to post these on the website as well as additional examples. We are also looking for additional examples of "using data in the classroom". So, if you've developed some cool exercises where the kids get into any number of databases (e.g. EPA data for heavy metals, organics, etc.; epidemiology; etc.) it would be great if you could share these exercises as well. Thanks for moving ahead. By the way, the Geology and Health Division at GSA will have about 8 theme sessions at the next fall meeting. Please look for announcements a bit later in the spring, and plan on submitting an abstract. This would be a great send-off for this new Division. Would it be possible for you to send me a copy of the course description and the syllabus that you have prepared. This will help me and others in developing similar course at other institutions. Thank you in advance for your assistance. Syed ________________________________ Syed E.
