From mogk at montana.edu Wed Sep 7 10:42:04 2005 From: mogk at montana.edu (Mogk, David) Date: Wed, 7 Sep 2005 11:42:04 -0600 Subject: [Healthwksp] Hurricane Katrina Visualization Collection for Instructional Use Message-ID: <55E2BF00E82C6F40B29C7ED824F523316D0681@GEMSTONES.msu.montana.edu> Dear Colleagues: In the wake of the Hurricane Katrina disaster, we now have another "teachable moment" in the earth sciences. Many of you will be teaching about this event in the coming week(s), and we wanted to call to your attention a new collection of visualizations on the NAGT On the Cutting Edge program website on Hurricane Katrina specifically, as well as visualizations on Historic Hurricanes, and Reconstructions and Visualizations of Model Hurricanes http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/visualization/collections/hurrica nes.html . Please use these resources in your own classes in the coming week(s), and also, please contribute additional resources (visualizations, URLs, reports, etc.) via: http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/visualization/contribute.html. In the midst of this tragedy, hopefully we can promote better public awareness about the causes and impacts of geo-hazards. Links are provided to information on chemicals that may be released as a result of the Katrina disaster and on environmental health concerns following the wind and flood damage. The page includes a link to WISER, the Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders. First responders may download the WISER set of information on 400 toxic chemicals and hazardous materials to a Palm, Pocket PC, or laptop/desktop computer that uses Microsoft Windows. WISER is designed to help identify unknown substances and gives ready access to basic emergency haz-mat information. Links to TOXMAP identify and map locations of facilities that use or transport significant levels of toxic chemicals, and lists the chemicals for each facility. Maps are included for the Katrina-affected states as well as for New Orleans, Biloxi, and Gulfport.
