From mogk at montana.edu Fri Aug 13 10:34:36 2004 From: mogk at montana.edu (Mogk, David) Date: Fri, 13 Aug 2004 11:34:36 -0600 Subject: [Healthwksp] AGU Session on Rates, Fluxes and Cycling Message-ID: <411CFBAC.5050400@montana.edu> Dear Colleagues: We would like to invite you to submit an abstract to the following session scheduled for the 2004 AGU Fall Meeting, Session ED10. The abstract deadline for electronic submissions is September 9. Please note that submission of abstracts to sessions sponsored by Education and Human Resources are not counted against the one-abstract rule. For the Cutting Edge worskhoppers, this would be a great venue for the biocomplexity folks to explore rates of biogeochemical cycling, use of geochemical tracers in the Earth system, etc. For the Health workshoppers, it would be great to hear about folks dealing with any number of transport mechanisms, dispersal of toxicants in the earth system, rates of uptake into biota, etc. We'll hope to see you in San Francisco! Rates, Fluxes, and Cycling in the Earth System: What Do We Know, What Are We Teaching? Description: Rates, fluxes and cycling are all concepts that are essential to understanding the dynamic Earth system. New advances in research have provided an array of new "speedometers" that provide exciting new insights into the duration, frequency, and magnitude of processes that translate and store mass and energy throughout the Earth system. As important as these concepts are to the geoscience curriculum, if is often difficult for students to comprehend these concepts (e.g. 3- and 4-D relations; temporal and spatial scales that are beyond human experience; complex interactions among competing processes; positive and negative feedback; impacts on humanity). This session invites presentations from all Earth sciences (e.g. mantle, crustal, surficial, atmospheric, near space) to demonstrate modern approaches to understanding rates, fluxes, and cycling in the Earth system, and to further demonstrate effective instructional practices that support learning of these concepts by students at all levels.
