Greetings NAGT Using Global Datasets workshop participants-
We are looking forward to seeing you on December 5. Our workshop will
start at 8:30 AM in the Pacific C room in the Marriott (see the AGU
webpage, www.agu.org, for map and directions).
The program for the workshop is available on-line at
http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/globaldata02/index.html. We are in
the process of assembling a program guide that provides additional
information, references and other resources to help you prepare for the
workshop. This is available now on the website and we will add to it as the
workshop approaches.
Of particular importance is the 3:00 development of activity plans. In
this session, you will work to create a plan for an activity based on
global data-sets that you would like to use in your own classroom
(instructions for this activity and reporting form are available on the
website). We hope that by providing you with time at the workshop to
reflect on how you would apply what you have learned to your own classroom,
you will be able to both solidify your thinking and have the opportunity to
ask the next round of questions of the workshop leaders and participants
(4:00 group discussion).
To maximize your own use of this time, you will want to think in advance
about what type of activity you might want to plan for your class and check
out the kinds of resources that you might want to use. To help you with
this, the program guide provides links to data and tools, as well as to
examples of a wide variety of data-rich classroom activities. You will be
able to complete the activity at the workshop using pen and paper. However,
if you prefer to think on a lap-top, please feel free to bring your own.
There will be very limited internet access during the workshop,. If you
have identified resources you would like to work with, please bring them
with you on your laptop, CD or zip.
We encourage you to contribute to the existing collections of tools,
datasets, and activities . This is a great way to share things that you
have found effective with your colleagues. Resources submitted via the
"Contribute a Resource" link become part of the NSDL Using Data Portal and
the DLESE collections.
It is our hope that you will leave the workshop with a better understanding
of goals and strategies, resources (datasets, tools, examples or model
activities), practical tips, and a network of colleagues to support your
continued use of global data sets. If you have any questions that will be
of interest to the whole group, please don't hesitate to use this
list-server. Questions that are more detailed can be sent directly to us.
Looking forward!
