Folks:
I'm looking forward to meeting you all at the "Using Global Data Sets to
Teach Earth Sciences" Cutting Edge workshop in San Francisco next month.
While there are numerous issues I am looking forward to discussing at
there, one outcome that particularly interests me is the initiation of new
projects aimed at contributing to the availability of global datasets that
can be used in GIS and other analysis tools. As part of the Consortium for
Materials Properties Research in Earth Sciences(COMPRES), I would like to
work with others to develop and offer, along with activities modules,
easy-to-use datasets that describe the Earth's interior in terms of
mineralogy, temperature, density, seimic wave velocities, and other
parameters, taking lateral heterogeneity into account. This should be done
in enough detail to enable students to find subduction zones, other plate
boundaries, mantle plumes and other interesting features.
Being located a few miles from the coastline, I'd also like to work with
others on the assembly of datasets that can be used to create maps of the
oceans (deep ocean as well as coastal areas). Attributes could include
flow velocity vectors for currents, timing relationships of tidal cycle
phases, temperatures, seasonal changes, biota, bottom features and
sediment.
