Hello All -
I hope the semester has been going well for you all. I find myself
reflecting constantly about the Geophysics workshop and the great ideas
that you all helped plant in my mind. I have two pressing questions
that I would appreciate your input on. I'll ask both questions in this
email and if you have input about either question, please respond only
to me. I will compile all of the responses and send out another email
in a week or so to everyone with the information I've gathered.
1. Geophysics Master's and PhD Programs
Since I did my research in planetary sciences, I know a lot about
planetary graduate programs, but I do not know nearly as much about
geophysics graduate programs. In particular, I have a student who is
interested in near-surface geophysics and is applying to graduate
schools this year. While this is perhaps an over-simplification, I'd
like to get a general idea of the well-known graduate programs in
(a)near-surface geophysics and (b)whole Earth geophysics. Please send
me any programs that you would recommend in these fields.
2. Geophysics Equipment
I have a small budget for a bit more geophysics equipment this year
($1,000 - $5,000). I already have a seismic system and a DC resistivity
system. I was hoping that I could purchase a magnetometer or EM methods
system (gravity and GPR are woefully out of my budget). I am also
interested in a Betsy Gun. Could any of you recommend good equipment
for primarily educational purposes that is relatively inexpensive? Feel
free to include other items and equipment for other methods, info about
companies, etc, that may be useful to our wider listserv when I send
back the summary of your suggestions.
Thank you! -- Jennifer
