Dear Colleagues,
Steve Whitmeyer and I have submitted a proposal for a GSA Special Paper
on: Field Geology Education: Historical Perspectives and Modern
Approaches. This is a first call to potential authors to solicit ideas
about potential contributions to this volume. Themes we've identified
include:
* Historical perspectives (traditional values of field studies)
* Modern field equipment and use of new technologies in the
field
* Original research
* International field education
* Alternative curricula (e.g. REU's etc.)
* Target audiences: K-12, introductory, capstone
* Field education pedagogy, assessment
* And additional ideas are welcome.
We are particularly interested in contributions that document the
pedagogic value of learning in the field, including learning goals and
assessments of learning. Please send us a brief outline of the topics
you could contribute to this volume. Deadline for submission of ideas is
January 1, 2008. We'll then work with this compilation of ideas to
further develop the contents of the Special Publication with GSA staff.
Thanks to all for your consideration of this call for ideas. Please send
contributions and queries to:
Dave Mogk (mogk at montana.edu) and
Steve Whitmeyer (whitmesj at jmu.edu)
Alumni of the Teaching Geophysics and Teaching Geohydrology
workshops...I hope you'll take this opportunity to contribute to this
volume...best to all, Dave Mogk
