[Geochemwksp] Gaps in the Geochemistry, Mineralogy, Petrology on-line collections

Hi Folks,

Following my note from yesterday, I thought it might be interesting to
start a conversation on this listserv about what teaching resources or
activities would really help you in your own instructional setting. I
think we'll find that others will have the same needs, and I'm
reasonably certain that someone in mineralogy-petrology-geochemistry
space already will have something good to share...

Please reflect a bit on your own teaching situation, and answer this
question to the listserv.... I wish I had an
assignment/activity/resource on:.......

To start, here's my own list:

I wish I had... a PowerPoint presentation on composition space and
reaction space (with reference to JB Thompson's articles in RIM Volume
10). Words elude me in my presentation of these topics, and my students
just don't get it. It would be great to have an accompanying problem
set, particularly using the matrix approach to balancing metamorphic
reactions. Can anyone help?

I wish I had...a clear and concise presentation on reciprocal
space...again, words elude me. I do pretty well getting the students to
determine appropriate Miller indices on crystal models, but the "why"
of reciprocal space is beyond my ability to communicate (and probably,
to fully comprehend).

I wish I had...updates on the MELTS program. I'm pretty sure Mark
Ghiorso told me that they are moving the program onto a new server. Has
anyone kept up to date with the latest version, and do you have some
good examples to share?

I wish I had...a good problem set on creation of pseudo-sections, with a
good example of a data set that works well. Then I could create some
additional problem sets using my own data.

Now it's your turn. What resources would you like to have access to?
This will help us identify things we need to look for (or create). If
you have resources on your own class website (or on other websites that
you know of) that address these questions, please send us the URL so we
can do the cataloging. And if you have activities/labs/problem sets in
these areas, please use the contribute form to upload these exercises.

Looking forward to your responses, and best to all,

Dave Mogk
