In mid April, the NSF-funded program "On the Cutting Edge" will offer a 2-day workshop "Teaching Public Policy in the Earth Sciences." The workshop will be held April 20 - 23, 2006 at the American Geophysical Union in Washington, DC. You can find the on-line application and more information about the workshop at http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/publicpolicy06/index.html

The application deadline for this workshop has been extended to February 17, 2006.
We apologize if you have received multiple copies of this email.

--------------------------------------------------------

The purpose of this workshop is to integrate the Earth sciences with sound decision-making in public policy as it relates to important issues such as climate change, hazards, resource development and many more. These issues may be addressed on the international, national, and local levels. Public policy topics are a great way to demonstrate the importance and relevance of the Earth Sciences in our personal and societal lives.

Please join us at this workshop to explore the many ways in which public policy issues can be integrated with the Earth Sciences across the geoscience curriculum in introductory courses, courses for majors, in courses in related disciplines, and for the general public.

The goals of the workshop are to:

a.. share information and explore opportunities to increase public awareness of the Earth Sciences through expanded instructional activities in teaching public policy in the Earth sciences
b.. integrate research and education by demonstrating how scientific data and research outcomes can inform public discourse on topical issues
c.. demonstrate a variety of instructional methods and activities related to climate change
d.. develop a plan to expand the coverage of public policy issues in undergraduate Earth science education (at all types of institutions and across the curriculum).
We very much hope that you will apply to attend the workshop and that you will pass this information on to other colleagues who might also make valuable contributions at the workshop. The application deadline is February 17, 2006.
