Dear Teaching Geochemistry Workshoppers,
Welcome again to the workshop and this mailing list. As we approach the
workshop, here are a few requests:
1. If you haven't done so already, please REGISTER on the workshop webpage:
http://serc.carleton.edu/dev/NAGTWorkshops/geochemistry05/registration.html
This is your confirmation that you will definitely be attending. We need
an accurate count of participants by April 29 so that we can plan the
final logistics. (The initial web form most of you filled out was the
application form to be considered for acceptance to the workshop). This
will only take a minute or so to fill out, so please do this now.
2. A major goal of the workshop is to facilitate sharing of ideas and
approaches to teaching geochemistry. We have reserved a couple of
sessions at the workshop for participants to present an example of one
of your teaching activities or exercises. This could either be an
example of your best (or favorite) exercise to share with the group, or
it could be an exercise or an activity in which you would like to
receive advice or feedback from colleagues. If you would like to make a
short presentation of an exercise, activity or problem set, please fill
out the "Contribute an Activity" form at:
http://serc.carleton.edu/dev/NAGTWorkshops/geochemistry05/contribact.html
Submission via this form will do two things: it will help you articulate
learning goals, context, assessment, etc. about the assignment, and it
will also help us grow our collections of on-line resources about
teaching geochemistry. The form is very easy to fill out--a few "drop
boxes" that request information about you and the exercise, and a few
text boxes to fill in. Then, you can simply upload any number of files
related to the exercise: text files, data sets, spread sheets, images,
solution sets, etc. Our staff can then take this input and create
"dynamic webpages" that can be discovered in our resource collections.
Examples of similar postings of activities can be found on our Teaching
Petrology and Teaching Structural Geology sites:
http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/petrology/teaching_materials.html
http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/structure/activities.html
We will organize the short demonstration sessions around the submissions
we receive. We expect that the presenters will give a 15-20 minute
overview of the exercise followed by group discussion.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A SHORT PRESENTATION, PLEASE SUBMIT THE
EXERCISE BY MAY 4. We will need a bit of lead-time to organize the
sessions, create the web pages, and print the exercises for the workshop
workbook. Everyone attending the workshop is invited (and encouraged!)
to submit an exercise--the success of the workshop really depends on
active participation by all. Please send us a note with the title of
your activity so that we can begin to plan the sessions
(mogk at montana.edu and dhenry at geol.lsu.edu).
Thanks to all for your interest in the Teaching Geochemistry workshop.
Looking forward to seeing all of you in Idaho in just over a month.
With best wishes,
Dave Mogk and Darrell Henry
