From mogk at montana.edu Wed Oct 1 13:40:11 2003 From: mogk at montana.edu (David Mogk) Date: Wed, 01 Oct 2003 14:40:11 -0600 Subject: [Biowksp] Biocomplexity Autumn Updates Message-ID: <3F7B3BAB.5070408@montana.edu> Hi Folks--Greetings from Montana! I hope you've all enjoyed a great summer, either in gainful productivity or just relaxing and enjoying life. Now that we're all back on campus, I thought it would be a good time to reflect on what's been happening, and to look ahead. First, we've been busy over the summer, and I'm pleased to announce that we've just released a new, cataloged collection of resources on the workshop webpage to support teaching biocomplexity in the geosciences: http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/biocomplexity03/ and access the Biocomplexity Resources link. In addition, all of the workshop materials that were submitted are now accessible via the Progam Guide on the webpage (e.g. PowerPoint presentations, posters, discussion questions and summaries, etc.). Special thanks to Karin Kirk for preparing this collection and to Cathy Manduca and Sean Fox at Carleton College for their technical support. We continue to search for more resources and references to add to this collection. Now would be a good time to help us find more resources to fill the gaps in these collections--you can use the Contribute a Resource/Reference tool on the webpage, or just send me a note with the URL and a few words about why the site is interesting or important. Many of you are now having your first opportunity to teach about biocomplexity in your geoscience courses. Some of you may be teaching fully developed biocomplexity courses (or planning to), others may be using smaller, discrete biocomplexity "modules" in your regular geoscience course offerings. In either case, please use this listserv as a forum where you can keep us up to date about your activities. It would be great if you could share your course outlines, syllabus, and examples of teaching activities. If your material is posted on a webpage, send us the URL and we'll get it cataloged into the collection. This is also a place where you can solicit help in finding scientific information or advice on best teaching practices. If you have a course outline or teaching materials in preparation, this is also a good place to get some early reviews and suggestions. Mostly, I'd just like to encourage you to write "home" and let us know what you're up to, how we can help. We need this information to help us demonstrate the longitudinal impacts the workshop may have produced. We also need to think about next steps. Are there opportunities for us to further develop teaching biocomplexity in the geosciences? Perhaps a textbook or laboratory workbook? A special theme session at GSA, AGU or other professional society meeting? Scholarly articles? Creation of new multi-disciplinary collaborations? We made a lot of progress at the workshop, but that was just the beginning. Please share your ideas about how we should proceed. Thanks to all for your continuing interest in biocomplexity. You might want to check out the schedule of new workshops for the 2003-2004 season on the On the Cutting Edge workshop homepage (linked from the BC page). Wishing you all the best, Dave Mogk mogk at montana.edu p.s. We're in the process of changing the design of the webpage. The content will be essentially the same, but the look will be different, so don't be surprised. On Monday night from 7:00 to 9:00 we will be gathering at the Sheraton - suite 422. Please drop by to renew the contacts you made at workshops, learn what is happening with workshop follow on activities, and see what is planned for this year. Snacks but not alcohol will be available. Looking forward to seeing you! Cathy, Heather, Barb and Dave I think we should have at this event: poster, flyers, bookmarks, web-site demo. What else? Do we have any materials that we can put on a table or wall that describe post-workshop activities??? I don't think we should do any work here -- just think about what we might want to have available. I can bring website on my laptop so we can have a website demonstration without an internet connection. We should have some web-design pages before gSA :). Cathy Cathryn A.
