From mogk at montana.edu Tue Mar 25 17:38:50 2003 From: mogk at montana.edu (David Mogk) Date: Tue, 25 Mar 2003 18:38:50 -0700 Subject: [Biowksp] Biocomplexity--just a week away Message-ID: <3E8104AA.3080204@montana.edu> Hi folks--we're just a week away from the biocomplexity workshop. We're very much looking forward to meeting all of you, and we're certainly expecting to have a great time. Just a few reminders: 1) Check the weather before you leave. This past week we have had temperatures range from the 60s to near-zero. We most likely will be walking on snow in Yellowstone National Park on the field trip. So please, come prepared. Layered clothing works best in the ever-changing weather of Montana. 2) If you are planning on demonstrating any course work at the Share Fair, please send any files by the end of the week. We'll be happy to print these out and reproduce copies of any materials you care to distribute at the workshop. Remember that we won't have live internet connections, so please have any computer-based activities self-contained on your laptop. 3) I've also attached (again) the guidelines for contributions--please plan to present a poster to let us know what you're doing, or what you would like to be doing in your biocomplexity research and/or teaching. 4) We still need a few biocomplexity images from a few of you. Please send these to Karin Kirk (kkirk at montana.edu) before Friday. We'll need this if you are going to participate in the first activity of the opening session. Any image that represents your interest in biocomplexity would be appreciated. 4) By the end of the week, we'll be sending out a list of surface transportation plans for travel from the airport to Chico Hot Springs. We'll have three university vans leaving at about noon, ~1:30 and ~4:00 PM from the airport. One of the MSU crew (Karin Kirk, Laurie Gorton, or Dave Mogk) will either meet you at the baggage carousel, or if you get in a bit early, just plan to relax at the Overland Express restaurant/lounge at the airport. This restaurant has a staggering view of the Bridger Range, and is a good place to regroup and decompress after a long day of travel. We'll be sending lists to let you know who will be traveling in which van. And many of you will be arriving on the same flights so this will be a good chance for you to begin to meet the other participants. If you get delayed in transit, please contact us at the Dept. of Earth Sciences office (406 994-3331) before 4 PM, or at Chico (contact numbers are on the travel info site on the website) after 4. We're looking forward to a great workshop. See you soon, Cheers, Dave Mogk -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Being a weather weenie, I thought you might like to see a website for the local weather forecast. It has been changing a bit from forecast period to forecast period - and we are likely to see snow in Yellowstone. Go to http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/wrhq/TotalForecast.csh?TotalForecast+WR+MT+040+067 for more information. It appears we may have typical spring weather - clouds, rain, and snow. Such conditions will make the time in the hot spring pool even better! Bring your swimming suits! See you there wednesday! A few last minute notes to help you find your way: 1. Dave McGinnis sent out the weather forecast earlier today. Be prepared--last Thursday we got a foot of snow in town, today it was 65 degrees--long term forecast for the week is highs in the 40's with chances of rain and snow showers. We'll be pretty much covered up at Chico, but the field trip may be a bit blustery. Make sure you bring a wind jacket, boots to walk on snow, gloves, hat...dress in layers to be comfortable on the field trip. 2. I've attached a list of participants and a schedule of vans that will shuttle you to Chico. Most folks are arriving near mid-day. Two vans will be leaving at ~1:15 and a second at ~2:00. Many of you will be on the same flights--so get to know each other on the way. We'll meet you at the baggage claim, or if you have a little extra time to kill, just head to the second floor restaurant and lounge--nice view and a good place to hang out. The last van will pick up the later arrivals at about 4:00. (The Bozeman airport is not so big that it will be difficult to find you) . 3. Please remember to download and fill out the emergency medical form. Put this in a sealed envelope and give this to us when you arrive. This remains completely confidential and will be destroyed once the workshop is done. We do need to have this information on file in case of an emergency. The form can be found on the website at the link on the registration form. 4. Please download the travel info (linked on the webpage). Please give a call if you get delayed in travel. Call the Dept. Earth Sciences office before 4 PM 406 994-3331, or Chico Hot Springs after 4 to let us know what your status is. Hopefully you'll all make it here without incident, but these days who knows? Thanks to all of you who have sent materials of many kinds. This is a great start. Looking forward to seeing you in Montana in just a couple of days.
