From mogk at montana.edu Thu Feb 6 13:05:12 2003 From: mogk at montana.edu (David Mogk) Date: Thu, 06 Feb 2003 14:05:12 -0700 Subject: [Biowksp] Biocomplexity Worskhop Invitation Message-ID: <3E42CE08.50506@montana.edu> Dear Friends and Colleagues, Here are the latest updates on the Teaching Biocomplexity in the Geosciences Worskhop: 1) The registration form is posted on the worskhop website (left navigation bar): http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/biocomplexity03/ Please take a moment and fill out the registration form, with details of your travel plans and any special needs you might have. Please register by March 1! We will open any available spaces for other colleagues who are on the waiting list after that date. 2) I have attached an information form of FAQs about travel logistics, weather, facilities, contact numbers. 3) I have also attached the updated workshop agenda. In the near future we will be contacting some of the participants to help us with facilitating and recording/reporting on the discussion sessions. 4) We are planning a poster session and a "Share Fair" to demonstrate current instructional activities. I've attached some guidelines for these activities. 5) We have enacted a "Contribute a Resource" service (left navigation bar). Please help us build a thematic collection of useful resources that contribute to your work in biocomplexity. These can either be references to articles, books and other reports, or "Contribute an Example" could be any digital resource that helps to support your work in biocomplexity and education: e.g. databases and tools, links to agencies, examples of instructional materials, course syllabi and curricula, ...Please supply the URL and a brief description of the context and content of the resources. We'll catalog these as a thematic collection to support workshop activities, and to be disseminated through the growing network of digital libraries. 6) Please send us a digital image that in some way represents your interest or participation in Biocomplexity. This could be a representation of some aspect of your research project, a field shot from your study/class site, perhaps even a metaphorical representation of how you view biocomplexity... The image should be high enough resolution so that we can print this off on a full page 8.5 x 11 inches. We are going to use these images for an "ice breaker" activity, so every one needs to be represented. Please copy these images to: Dave Mogk, mogk at montana.edu and Karin Kirk, kkirk at montana.edu (in the next couple of weeks would be appreciated). 7) To get you thinking about Biocomplexity in a general way, you may want to take a look at these articles: Defining and unraveling biocomplexity. W. Mitchener et al. Bioscience Dec. 2001 51:1018-1023. and a new report just released from NSF from the Advisory Committee on Environmental Research and Education, the "Synthesis report", "Complex Environmental Systems: Synthesis for Earth, Life, and Society in the 21st Century." A PDF version can be accessed via: http://www.nsf.gov/geo/ere/ereweb/advisory.cfm and we will distribute print copies at the workshop. We've got a great roster of participants, and a great topic to work with. We're very much looking forward to meeing all of you in Montana in just a couple of months! I need to ask each of you about preferences in rooms. Based on availability at Chico, you can a) share a room (two queen size beds/room) in the new addition at Chico, or b) have a single room in the older part of the hotel (characterized as charming, most of the rooms will have a bathroom in the room, but a few may have "shared facilities", i.e. a bathroom down the hall shared by 2-3 rooms. Staff reports that they've never had a complaint about traffic jams...). Could you please send me a note at mogk at montana.edu to let me know of your room preference? My experience at other short courses and workshops is that roommates can sometimes become lifelong collaborators. However, you may prefer the privacy of your own room. Just let me know. We've asked a few of the participants to serve as co-leaders for some of the discussion sessions. Thanks to those who have already confirmed that they have agreed to help lead these sessions. For those who have not yet responded, please let me know if you can indeed help in this capacity so that we can finalize the agenda. Be thinking of a single digital image that represents your interests in biocomplexity. Please send this to us ASAP so that we can print these out for an "icebreaker" activity. And please suggest any URLs that support your research or teaching about biocomplexity (these can be submitted on the workshop webpage, or just send me an e-mail). We're gearing up for a great show. Looking forward to meeting all of you in just a few weeks. best for now, Dave Mogk From mogk at montana.edu Fri Feb 28 10:04:59 2003 From: mogk at montana.edu (David Mogk) Date: Fri, 28 Feb 2003 11:04:59 -0700 Subject: [Biowksp] Biocomplexity workshop Updates Message-ID: <3E5FA4CB.4050109@montana.edu> Greetings Workshoppers, Plans are moving along nicely and we're very excited about meeting all of you. First, let me thank those of you who have already registered. If you haven't registered, please do so as soon as possible (Monday morning at the latest, but now would be better) because we have to confirm rooms and surface transportation on Monday. Regarding travel, please make sure your plans are to arrive in Bozeman MT (BZN) on WEDNESDAY APRIL 2 before 5 PM so that we can get you to Chico in time for dinner. Also, please remember to e-mail us a digital image of any aspect of biocomplexity that represents your interests. And we encourage you to please come to the workshop with a) a poster of what you are doing, or what you would like to work on, in the area of teaching biocomplexity, and b) any course or curricular materials, virtual or real, that you are currently using to demonstrate at the share fair. Both the posters and materials can be "works in progress"--after all, this is a workshop on an emerging theme to help jumpstart new opportunities. Please let us know the title of your poster, and send us any course materials (or URLs that you use) so that we can have these included in the workshop program. Looking forward to seeing you in just a couple of weeks! With best wishes, Dave Mogk
