Dear Colleagues:

I'm writing to invite you to dive in to the University of Delaware's
latest on-line expedition, "Extreme 2002: Mission to the Abyss," at
http://www.ocean.udel.edu/extreme2002. This past April at the meeting
in Washington, DC, Dr. Craig Cary and I presented a poster on how we are
working to extend marine research to the public through this educational
program targeted at middle and high school students. Several of you
provided some good suggestions for the program, which were very helpful.

On Oct. 21, Dr. Cary and a team of 23 scientists and graduate students
from the U.S. and New Zealand set sail from San Diego on a 24-day
expedition to hydrothermal vent sites in the Pacific Ocean about 1,100
miles off Costa Rica. To keep classrooms posted on what is happening out
at sea, our shipboard education coordinators (a graduate student from
the UD College of Marine Studies and a Delaware middle-school teacher)
have been writing journals, taking photos and video clips, running
experiments submitted by classrooms, and relaying the info. back to
shore on a daily basis for posting on the Web site. The Web site is one
component of a multimedia package of classroom resources (curriculum
activities, resource guides, evaluations, documentary video) provided to
each of our participating schools.

More than 500 classrooms across the U.S. and in several foreign
countries, representing over 42,000 students, are participating in the
program this year. It is funded by the National Science Foundation, with
additional support from NOAA Sea Grant, WHYY TV (PBS) in
Wilmington/Philadelphia, and the MBNA Foundation.

If you would like additional information, please contact me. Thanks for
your support!

Regards,

Tracey
