Dear Colleagues and Friends,
I'd like to take the opportunity to launch this listserv with a note of 
thanks to all the speakers and participants at the Integrating Education 
in Biocomplexity Research workshop.  I hope the breadth of experiences 
at the workshop--formal talks, activities, posters, informal 
conversations and networking--will prove  to be  useful as you move 
ahead with your own education and outreach missions.

I would like to encourage you to use this forum as a means to continue 
this good work.  This is a great opportunity to maintain and extend 
contacts, to solicit help and information, and to share new advances and 
post opportunities.  Also, if you haven't had a chance to do so, please 
visit the accompanying biocomplexity website at: 
 dlesecommunity.carleton.edu
Many of the resources we presented at the workshop are posted there: 
 information from NSF, links to the biocomplexity projects and 
supporting URLs, tips on partnering, dissemination, and assessment.  I 
hope to continue to build this resource base, so please send any 
additional contributions and suggestions to me at:  mogk at montana.edu.

We should also extend a special note of thanks to the NRC staff who made 
the workshop possible--Kerry, Valerie, Bridget, Jay, Robert (and I'm 
sure, others), and to NSF for their sponsorship.  I trust you have all

                                Dissertations Initiative for the
                     Advancement of Climate Change Research

DISCCRS is a new program for recent PhDs investigating climate change 
and its impacts. It promotes interdisciplinary interactions among 
atmospheric, terrestrial and aquatic scientists and fosters links to 
relevant social science disciplines. The American Geophysical Union 
(AGU), American Society of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO), 
American Meteorological Society (AMS) and Ecological Society of 
America (ESA) are jointly sponsoring this initiative.  The program 
includes:
*  DISSERTATION REGISTRY:
    An online, searchable Ph.D. Dissertation Registry introduces
    grads to the community and provides a concise overview of
    recent advances from around the world
*  E-MAIL DISTRIBUTION LIST:
    Job and other announcements are transmitted electronically.
    to recent grads. Messages may be sent to phd at whitman.edu
    for distribution.
*  SYMPOSIUM:
     A capstone symposium fosters international, interdisciplinary
     understanding and collegial networks. Grads have an opportunity to
     present their research, meet with agency representatives, and
     discuss emerging research, education and societal issues.
     Forty participants will be selected by a committee based on the
     application materials submitted. Airfare and on-site expenses are
     subsidized by agencies (NASA and NSF).
