Evolution of antibiotic resistance in bacteria part of Cutting Edge:Complex Systems:Teaching Activities
This activity is intended to guide students to apply principles of evolution by natural selection to explain a real world biological phenomenon (the evolution of bacteria populations resistant to common antibiotics). This activity involves making observations, linking evidence to theory, and constructing scientific arguments and conceptual models that incorporate multiple scales of biological organization (molecular, organismal, population) in the context of a changing environment, over time.

Deriving Common Model Characteristics part of Cutting Edge:Complex Systems:Teaching Activities
In this activity, students brainstorm ideas about what models are (and are not) and what elements are common to most models of biological systems. Further, students derive the criteria that the learning community (instructor and student) will use to evaluate models, both those created by us and those created by others.

Biological Sciences 110: Organisms and Populations is a foundational biology course that focuses on principles of genetics, evolution, and ecology, as well as the critical connections among them. Students actively engage in their learning of biology by working collaboratively to use the tools and practices of the discipline to reason through problems, evaluate information, and construct new knowledge that can be shared with others.
