Dredge Planning Using Sub-Bottom SONAR part of Cutting Edge:Sedimentary Geology:Sedimentology, Geomorphology, and Paleontology 2014:Activities
This project is designed to give students valuable geophysical experience in conducting an environmental assessment of a real-world problem. A scenario is developed in which students work for "Viking Consulting, LLC" as an environmental geologist. The company has been hired by the City of Salem to assess an appropriate confined aqueous disposal (CAD) cell location for contaminated dredge spoils from a proposed dredging project of the South River, Salem, MA. Students utilize sub-bottom SONAR technology to calculate volume of dredge spoils and potential CAD cell locations and analyze which location can accommodate the contaminated material.
Estuarine Salinity Distribution and Classification Project part of Cutting Edge:Sedimentary Geology:Sedimentology, Geomorphology, and Paleontology 2014:Activities
This is a field and lab activity in which students collect CTD data in a local estuary, contour the data, and analyze the results to classify the estuary based on standard classification schemes.
Historical Geology part of Cutting Edge:Course Design:Goals Database
This is the second class for majors. It also can serve as the second class of a two class science distribution requirement for non-science majors. The prerequisite it Physical Geology.

Estuaries are coastal water bodies that have large economic, ecologic, and aesthetic value, however many are currently being adversely affected by human actions. This class is designed to introduce the dynamics of estuaries in order to understand the interactions between the geosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere in these coastal water bodies. These systems will be investigated with regard to current natural and human influences on New England's estuaries. A field trip will be offered to expose students to environments discussed in class. Three lecture hours per week.
