I am a geology instructor at Del Mar College, a community college in Corpus Christi, TX. I currently teach Physical Geology lectures and labs. My graduate research focused on tectonic and volcanic features at mid-ocean ridges.
Investigating Stream Energy and Gradient Using Small Stream Tables part of Integrate:Workshops:Teaching the Methods of Geoscience:Activities
In this activity for a Physical Geology Lab, students investigate the relationship between stream energy and stream gradient using small stream tables. Students manipulate stream processes of sediment erosion and deposition by changing the gradient of their stream. Students will create hypotheses about stream processes and test them by observing stream behavior. Students compare and contrast their small stream models to real streams, emphasizing the ways in which the model does and does not approximate real life. Assessment is based on a series of questions and diagrams that students will complete.
Physical Geology Laboratory part of Integrate:Workshops:Teaching the Methods of Geoscience:Course
This page describes a freshman-level Physical Geology Laboratory class taught at a community college. This course covers basic Earth processes (streams, tectonics, groundwater) and Earth materials (minerals and rocks). Students develop skills in critical thinking, observation of natural phenomena, scientific writing, as well as basic geological skills (creating and reading maps, rock and mineral identification).
