Analytical and Numerical Insight into Lava Flows and Cinder Cones on Earth, Mars and Venus part of Cutting Edge:Discoveries from Mars:Activities
This three part exercise introduces students to comparative planetary geology using volcanology as the subject and both analytical and (for visualization of cone-building processes) numerical methods. Material properties of the lava flows at Amboy Crater are derived from geometric characteristics, then quantitative methods are used to predict what the same eruption would produce on Mars (and the Moon). -
Estimating Discharge from Ares Vallis Using Pathfinder Images and MOLA Topography part of Cutting Edge:Discoveries from Mars:Activities
Students use Pathfinder lander images and MOLA topography, in combination with tools including a Hjulstrom diagram, ternary plot and a simple Manning equation, to estimate the discharge through Ares Vallis on Mars and compare their values with published estimates. -
MER (Mars Exploration Rover ) Landing Site Selection part of Cutting Edge:Discoveries from Mars:Activities
Via a jigsaw role-playing exercise in which students become geologists, astrobiologists and engineers, real data and available constrains are used to identify landing sites for the MER rovers. A debate format is then used to select two landing sites. NOTE: a similar exercise can be developed for future missions. -

The problem addressed has geological, hydrological, biological and political implications, and is thus of interest to a wide array of undergraduates.
