Instructor Notes

Each module has a guide for the instructor. Instructor Notes include information about:
  1. what the student should get out of completing the module,
  2. why (we think) some students struggle with the concept covered in the module,
  3. what (if anything) we do not cover in the module and why it isn't covered, and
  4. resources for the instructor to learn more about the concept.
These pages are designed to help the instructor to understand whether this type of module is appropriate for what s/he is doing in class. They also help instructors to determine for what concepts this module might be appropriate in his/her course.

Assigning Modules

We have created a number of modules that represent what we view as overarching mathematical themes in introductory geoscience courses. This means that there are a number of topics in an introductory course that could be the introduction point for these themes and we have listed a number of topics which utilize the math presented in the module. Just before you touch on a geoscience topic with mathematical skills behind it, assign students the appropriate module. Completion of the module should bring students up to speed on the mathematical theme and allow you to spend less time in class. Students will complete a series of problems that relate to the topic at hand and should be well prepared for the use of the math in your course.
