An Extension of Just-in-Time Teaching: The Puzzle

Using JiTT to conclude a topic

Although JiTT is useful to introduce topics, the technique can also be utilized to end a subject and review material. This type of exercise is typically called a "puzzle." The puzzle will be a more complex question and require a more accurate response. A puzzle may involve a real-world scenario and integrate a variety of ideas. Puzzles are typically evaluated more rigorously.

Example puzzles may include:
  • showing students an assemblage of object which are interacting in some way, and have them construct free-body diagrams for all the objects
  • requiring students to provide a temporal and spatial analysis from a set of beach profiles with grain-size analyses collected along the profiles
  • having students compare the positive and negative impacts of drilling for oil in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge
