InTeGrate Events at the 2017 AGU Meeting

The American Geophysical Union's 2017 fall meeting is being held in New Orleans, LA, December 11-15, 2017 and InTeGrate will be there! Catch up with InTeGrate friends and learn about the project's activities.

Friends of SERC Gathering

For those attending the AGU meeting, we will have a gathering of friends of SERC (including the InTeGrate family) on Tuesday, December 12 at 7 p.m. This event is a nice opportunity to see peers, the SERC staff, and other people who collaborate with SERC on projects and who share your interest in geoscience education. This is a non-hosted event. We hope to see you there!

Please also consider volunteering to work the booth, which provides a great opportunity to talk to members of the geoscience community, meet other educators, distribute materials about InTeGrate, and get to know some of the NAGT staff, who will be on-hand throughout your volunteer shift to assist if needed.

Sustainable Solutions to Societal Issues: Teaching Earth Literacy Across the Undergraduate Curriculum

Show Workshop Description

Description: How do we prepare students for a future of climate change, water and food scarcity, resource depletion, and other sustainability concerns that will require an in-depth understanding of the intersection between the Earth and society? One strategy is to incorporate these issues into teaching at all levels across the undergraduate curriculum. InTeGrate has developed a set of community-built modules that directly address Earth-related grand challenges through the use of engaging, data-rich activities that incorporate interdisciplinary problem solving. These materials have been developed and tested by faculty at a variety of two-year and four-year institutions and come with built-in assessments and resources for both instructors and students. Topics are designed for classes in the geosciences, science education, environmental sciences, engineering, business, sociology, political science, psychology and literature that focus on topics ranging from environmental justice and freshwater resources to climate change, global food supply, ecosystem services, water sustainability in cities, sensory perception of the environment, coastal communities, mineral resources, systems thinking and natural hazards. In this workshop, we will explore the InTeGrate materials, discuss the underlying design rubric, and work with participants to adapt the materials to their institutional and geographic setting. This workshop is a partnership between AGU and the National Association of Geoscience Teachers.
