  Description:
    Abstract:
This map depicts fire starts in Yellowstone National
Park (YNP) from 1931-2004. YNP fire files were researched
by NPS firefighter/researcher Bob Flather. Superintendent
and other reports were researched from 1931-1971 for
maps and locational accounts. Individual Forest Fire
Reports forms 1972-2004 were researched and
entered into a database. All fire starts were matched
with a coordinate point and attributed with a unique identifier
      for linking with future databases.
All types of fires; suppression, prescribed, and Wildland fire use
fires are included in the data sets. The data set includes all fire points
that have been documented in 1202 reports, the SAC database or other maps or documents,
that fall entirely or partially within the park's administrative boundaries regardless of land ownership,
agency responsible for the fire, or type of fire (natural, prescribed, arson).
    Purpose:
The primary objective of this mapping effort was
to produce a map and GIS layer of all fire starts
to use this GIS layer to link the individual fires
with their historic data to aid in the development of
      models and analysis.

  Attribute_Accuracy:
    Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Fire locations were obtained from historic fire records.
A location field was added to the attribute table to assign a spatial
accuracy value (1 -- Lousy: Location off by several miles or
more. Terrible map, guessing needed, 2 -- Poor: Location more
than a mile off. Map is vague and inferences must be made,
      3 -- Average: Location within 1/2 to 1 mile).
Data fields (spatial and attribute) were double checked using
original hard copy maps and historic records. Any attribute errors
were corrected and the location attributes updated if necessary.
For fires from 1972-2003 accuracy of attribute information can be verified by cross-checking the data with the SACS database for fire history information. The information contained within SACS is dependant upon the accuracy of the source data. For fires before 1972 and any other fires omitted from SACS attributes were obtained from hardcopy reports and maps. If the attributes in SACS varied from the hardcopy reports and maps then attribute information was obtained hardcopy documents.
  Logical_Consistency_Report:
Features were obtained from ground truthing and historic fire reports.
Attribute information was entered manually and checked against historic
    fire reports.
  Completeness_Report:
Dataset needs to be validated by
researcher or GIS operator to verify the location of
fires with a location confidence of 3. Dataset
    needs to be updated annually.

and attribute information was obtained from historic
        fire records and digitized on-screen.
