        Backcountry Campsites of Yellowstone National
        Park, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho

  Description:
    Abstract:
The Backcountry Campsite Survey took place during
the years of 1997 - 2000. Differentially corrected
GPS data were collected primarily on foot for all
existing maintained on-trail campsites within the
boundaries of Yellowstone National Park (YNP). The
backcountry campsites locations that could not be
obtained through the GPS survey were acquired
through the uses of 1- meter DOQQs (Digital
Orthophoto Quarter Quads) and the assistance of
backcountry rangers with knowledge of where the
campsites are located. There are also associated
GPS data for trails, bridges, and patrol cabins.
There are several campsites missing from this
layer, as this is a work in progress (please see
the Completeness Report in the Data Quality
      Information Section).
    Purpose:
This survey is intended to provide a more accurate
      geographical coverage of backcountry campsites
      within Yellowstone National Park. Existing
campsite information was known to contain errors.
For the safety of backcountry users, purposes of
      maintenance, and for conducting campsite
evaluations the 1997 - 2000 trail survey was
      expanded to encompass backcountry campsites.

  Attribute_Accuracy:
    Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Data collection was stream-lined through the use
of a data dictionary attribute menu installed in
the GPS data logger. This procedure enhances
      accuracy by reducing attribute related
decision-making in the field and minimizing keying
errors. A few features were not recorded with a
GPS unit. These were heads-up digitized using
1:24000 USGS digital raster graphics and 1-meter
Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quads. Campsites that
were not located using the GPS are noted in the
attribute table. Quality control was done by NPS
district rangers and Spatial Analysis Center staff
who verified the positional and attribute data of
the features. Each feature in this coverage
represents one campsite location. The majority of
the campsites have unique names. The exceptions
are campsites that are used by both stock and
foot travelers. These campsites can have the same
name but are two different campsites, located in
      close proximity to one another.
  Logical_Consistency_Report:
There are no duplicate features or attributes
    found in these data.
  Completeness_Report:
Some campsites are not included in the dataset as
of July, 2000. Some of this is due to surveyor
error but also because some campsites lie far
from main backcountry travel routes. The areas
that have not been checked by a backcountry ranger
are the Gallatin and Tower subdistrict. The
campsites that are still missing from this
    coverage are: 6M5, 5L9, 5L8, and 6A1.
  Positional_Accuracy:
    Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
      Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Data produced from GPS (Global Positioning System)
field data are assumed to be spatially accurate to
within 2-5 meters. Data acquired from DOQQs can
have a spatial accuracy within 5-10 meters. These
data should meet or exceed national map accuracy
        standards.

GPS data were collected with Trimble ProX units

Campsite locations that were not surveyed with a
GPS were obtained by having backcountry rangers
from each district identify where the campsite is
located on a 1-meter DOQQ. Using ArcView, a point
was digitized to the specified location. The
ArcView shapefile of campsites was converted to an
Arc/Info coverage using the SHAPEARC command with
PRECISION set to DOUBLE HIGH. The coverage was
then added to the coverage containing the GPS
campsites using the PUT command in ArcEdit.

campsites, located in close proximity to one

protocol of the Yellowstone National Park
Backcountry Office. TYPE corresponds to the type
of use permitted at each campsite. Stock sites can
be used by travelers with horses or other type of
stock, foot sites are only for hikers and dock
sites are for boat travel. The SURVEYOR is the
person who recorded the site and the SURVYDAT is
the date on which the site was recorded. SURVEY
relates to how the location information was
obtained. The survey method is either GPS, using
a Globe Positioning System, or Office, using DOQQs
in the office and the knowledge of a backcountry
      ranger familiar with the area.
