They are primarily connected to plate margin activity, mostly convergent boundaries, yet some big ones along transform strike-slip faults like San Andreas and the China-Indo plate margin (Chendung).

What factors influence earthquake prediction?
Other earthquakes. Time between events. Tension or compression readings in the faults.

Where on Earth do most of the really big earthquakes strike?
Active plate boundaries - My guess is the next big 8+ quake will hit southern Chile near Chaiten.
