Part 1: Display Data with a GIS

In any step, click the Show me link to reveal extra information. If you prefer a printout of the full set of instructions for this part, choose Print from the File menu.

Step 1-
Download and Install ArcVoyager Special Edition GIS

  1. Download the installer file for your computer.
  2. Note: These installers are very large files (37MB). Downloading them via a phone connection could take several hours. High speed Internet access is recommended.

    ArcVoyager SE Installer for Mac ( 26.8MB Aug10 04)
    • Mac users hold down the ctrl key, click on the link above, and select "Download link to disk..." or the similar command available in your browser application. Once the installer file is complete, double-click its icon and follow the installer prompts. Note that ArcVoyager is a Classic application.

    ArcVoyager SE Zipped for PC ( 37.6MB Aug11 04)
    • PC users right-click on the link above and choose "Save Target As..." or the similar command available in your browser application to download the installer to the computer's hard drive. Once complete, unzip the files. Unzipping should create a directory called Special.
  3. If your browser did not automatically unstuff or unzip the installer for your platform, use a decompression program to do so. Once decompressed, start the installer and follow its prompts.

For Macintosh

  1. Unstuff or unzip the installer file (arcvoyagerse_installer.hqx). Double-click the unstuffed installer file and follow its installation instructions.

  2. Once installed, an ESRI folder or directory containing the ArcVoyager software will be placed in a location that you specify.

For Windows

  1. Unstuff or unzip the installer file (avgse.zip) into a folder of your choosing. This can be a temporary folder that can be deleted after the installation is complete. A new folder named/SPECIAL will be created.
  2. Open the folder/SPECIAL and open the README.TXT file for reference.

  3. Find the ArcVoyager Setup program SETUP.EXE in /SPECIAL and double-click it to begin installation.

  4. Install ArcVoyager to c:\VOYAGER (default location). A data folder and program folder will be placed in that location. The data folder contains additional readme and ArcVoyager guides.

Step 2-
Download Data Files

  1. Save and unzip the following files into a folder named \Shearwave.
    • Mac users: Hold down the ctrl key and click "Download link to disk..." (or the equivalent command available in your browser application) to download the following zipped files. Save them into the folder \Shearwave, then unstuff or unzip the files.
    • PC users: Right-click on each link below and choose "Save Target As..." (or the equivalent command available in your browser application) to download the files and save them in the \Shearwave folder. Unzip the files into \Shearwave.

Step 3-
Navigate to Startup Project, Creating New Worlds: TURN ME LOOSE

An important note about ArcVoyager SE: ArcVoyager SE is a freely available version of ESRI's ArcView 3.X GIS application. One of the main differences in the two programs is that ArcVoyager projects cannot be saved. If you want to save a picture of a map or other display from ArcVoyager, you will have to perform a screen capture then paste the image into a paint or drawing program to save or print it. Alternatively, if you have ArcView 3.X GIS software available, you can use it to complete the chapter, and save your work as a project.

  1. Mac users navigate to the ESRI folder and launch ArcVoyager Special Edition.
PC users go to the Start Menu to launch the program.
  2. Scroll through the ArcVoyager Guide and open the Creating New Worlds: Startup Project.

For Macintosh

  1. Locate the ESRI folder or directory and launch ArcVoyager by clicking on the application icon.
    ArvVoyager desktop icon

  2. Click OK and wait for the ArcVoyager Guide to open.

  3. Click Creating New Worlds: Turn Me Loose by the rocket to activate the fourth section of the ArcVoyager Guide.

  4. Click Creating New Worlds: Start-up Project by the key.

  5. Click the magnifying glass to activate the Start-up Project.

  6. Click OK and wait for ArcVoyager to open.

  7. ArcVoyager opens with a blank map space, View1. A menu bar, button bar, and tool bar are visible at the top.

For Windows

  1. Launch ArcVoyager by going to the Start menu>All Programs>ArcVoyager>ArcVoyager Special Edition.

  2. Click Creating New Worlds: Turn Me Loose by the rocket to activate the fourth section of the ArcVoyager Guide.

  3. Click Creating New Worlds: Start-up Project by the key.

  4. Click the magnifying glass to activate the Start-up Project.

  5. ArcVoyager opens with a blank map space, View1. A menu bar, button bar, and tool bar are visible at the top.

Step 4-
Set Up a Base Map to View Relevant Themes

Add themes that display country borders, tectonic plate boundaries, earthquake epicenters, and shear wave velocities. Adjust how the themes are displayed.

  1. Click the Add Theme button, browse to the \Shearwave folder, and select the following themes. Hold down the shift key to select multiple themes.
    country.shp
    depth_028_grid.shp
    depth_100_grid.shp
    plat_lin.shp
    plat_pol.shp
    quak7093.shp
Click Add All on the Mac or OK on the PC.
  2. Make ArcVoyager active and you will see the following window. Click the Add Theme button to add data to the map view.

When the Add Theme dialog box appears, browse to the \Shearwave folder where you stored the files in Step 2. Select the following themes. To add multiple themes at once, click Add All for Macintosh, or hold down the shift key on PCs, then click OK.

  3. In the map view window, you'll see the name of the themes you just added. Click in the small box next to the name of each theme to turn them on and display their map layers.
  4. Look at the list of themes and notice which one has a raised border around it: this is the active theme. When you activate a theme by clicking on its name, you instruct ArcVoyager GIS to pay attention to that particular theme. Understanding the difference between a theme that is turned on and one that is active can save you time and help prevent frustration.
    • A checked box next to a theme name means that the theme is on: its map layer will be drawn in the map view.
    • A raised border around a theme name means that it is active: the program will perform whatever analysis procedure you choose on this theme.
A theme may be on or off as well as active or not. Also, more than one theme can be on and more than one theme can be active. In the "Show me how" above, the active theme is Depth_100_grid. Your view may have a different active theme.
  5. Practice turning themes on and off and changing which theme is active so you understand the difference between on and active.
  6. In addition to turning themes on or making them active, you can change the "stacking order" of the map layers. Click and drag the name of any theme to the bottom of the list of themes (the list of themes is known as the Table of Contents). Practice moving themes up and down in the list and examine how it changes the map view.
  7. Each theme in a GIS is a separate layer that builds the map. Themes are mapped as either points, lines, or polygons. The thematic layers are drawn from the bottom to the top as they appear in the Table of Contents. In some arrangements of themes in the Table of Contents, it is possible for some layers to completely cover others. In general, polygons should be placed at the bottom, while lines and points would be arranged near the top.
  8. When you are ready to move on, turn the country.shp, plat_lin.shp, and plat_pol.shp themes on and all others off.
  9. To prepare to analyze the data, position the themes in the following order from top to bottom in the Table of Contents:
    quak7093.shp
    plat_lin.shp
    country.shp
    depth_028_grid.shp
    depth_100_grid.shp
    plat_pol.shp

    Make the plat_pol.shp theme active.
