I will be running a special short course during our schools Exploration week entitled Gann Goes Biotech. This is one of the investigations I will be doing that comes from a kit but I decided to analyze the results using ImageJ and Excel. Students will isolate DNA from their own cheek or hair follicle cells and then using PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) ammplify out a sequence called Alu PV92 that varies in the size of the PCR product produced depending on the persons genotype for this allele. The will then separate the PCR products by size on an agarose gel take a digital photo and analyze with ImageJ and Excel.
