My students are working on a long-term stream monitoring project with the Lexington Conservation Commission. The first step is to collect data while waking the length of the stream (this takes the better part of a week). Data collected in each spot where an issue (erosion, pollution, outfall pipes, invasives, etc.) is found, and includes a picture of the issue and the GPS coordinates. The kids are now in the process of creating a CSV file with this data, and will eventually add this to datalayers from MassGIS and the Conservation Commission with info about land use, run-off/watershed patterns, etc to try and find correlations to the issues documented. Eventually they will make recommendations on how to fix the issues, and will do the actual "fixing" themselves when possible.

This is a powerful project.
I would love to look at something like this, but our time on erosion is too small. I have a bout one week to cover all types of erosion and weathering.

Hi Emily!
This project seems VERY amazing. I love that the kids are not just studying about monitoring, but actually making recommendations. This is great real world stuff.
Looking forward to seeing you soon! Happy holidays! Karen :)
