Part 4—Prepare Auburn FIA Data for Analysis

Step 1 – Symbolize Twenty FIA Plots

  1. Launch My World and open the project file that you saved in Part 3.
If you have trouble downloading data or saving the project file, then use this completed (and saved) project file.
    Maine_Forest_Part_3.m3vz ( 17.6MB Jun30 10)
Right-click (PC) or control-click (Mac) the link above to download the file.
  2. The project opens with the following layers on and zoomed into the Auburn FIA plot:
    • Auburn FIA2.csv
    • Maine Cities
    • U.S. States
    • Continents
    • Lines of Latitude & Longitude
  3. Symbolize the twenty Forest Inventory Analysis (FIA) Auburn FIA plots that you imported in Part 3. Make the symbols medium-sized (60%), orange-colored and circular.

  4. The 20 plots are now symbolized and displayed on the map.

Step 2 – Subset FIA Plot Data To Create a New Layer for Plot 2

  1. Click on Auburn FIA2.csv layer name to make it the active layer. Active layers are highlighted in white with a yellow line around them. Click on the Show Table of the Active layer button. It looks like a spreadsheet.
  2. In the Table of Layer window, scroll down the list. Notice that there are several Simple Plots # (e.g., 1, 2, 3, etc.) identified in the left-most column of the data table. Choose all the records for plot #2. Click on the first record in the group with your cursor, hold the shift key, and highlight all of the data for that site.
  3. Click on the Make Selection from Rows button. Name the results of the selection with a new name, "Auburn FIA Plot #2". Click OK. My World will return to the Map window.
  4. Once the selection is complete, change the Highlight Mode to "Hide Unselected". Plot #2 will be selected and displayed on the map, while the others are hidden.
  5. 8 hide unselected
  6. Save the new map with the selections as Maine_Forest_Part_4. If this is the end of the session, quit My World GIS.
  7. If you had trouble making the selections or saving the project file, then use this completed (and saved) project file. Maine_Forest_Part_4.m3vz ( 17.6MB Jun30 10). Right-click or control-click (Mac) the link above to download the file.
