Other Data
Other Techniques
Plotting the ESI data can provide alternate means of viewing and analyzing it that complement the mapping. Two types of plots that are especially useful are scatter plots and radar graphs.
Scatter Plots
Scatter plots can reveal correlations between the ESI and a specific
component such as [favorite component]. If the data points in a scatter plot
cluster along a sloped line, as in the example below. it indicates that the
two types of data plotted might be related. (how to say this more accurately).
For example, the plot below shows that countries with a high ESI score also
tend to have a high score in [favorite component].
In some cases, the points don't scatter along a sloped line. For example [other example] does not correlate stronly with ESI score.
Scatter plots can be quickly made from the 2005 ESI Data spreadsheet using
the Chart Wizard in Excel.
Show me how.
To make a scatter plot of ESI vs. ?????? first selectt the ESI column in the
spreadsheet by clicking on the letter at the top of the column.
Next, select the ????? column by holding down the command key, and then clicking
the letter at the top of that column.
Click on the Chart Wizard button.
Select XY (Scatter) as the Chart Type, and make sure the Chart sub-type with
no lines is selected.
Click Finish.
To add the line, click the graph to select it then choose Add Trendline... from
the Chart menu.
Select the Linear type, and click OK.
Radar Graphs
Radar graphs can be used to quickly compare the scores on the five
core components of the ESI simultaneously. The country profiles in Appendix
B of the 2005 ESI report show these for each country. One interesting comparison
to make is between countries with similar ESI scores. For example, ______ and
_________ have ESI scores of ________ and __________. Yet a radar graph of the
5 core componets show that these countries have very different strengths and
weaknesses in their progress towards environmental sustainability.
[examples]
Radar graphs can be quickly made from the 2005 ESI Data spreadsheet using
the Chart Wizard in Excel.
Show me how.
To make a radar graph, go to the row of the country you are intersted in and
select just the 5 cells in its row for the 5 core components. {list}.
Click the Chart Wizard Button.
Select Radar as the Chart type.
Click Finish.
The data is plotted in the order of the cells selected to make the graph. In
this example the order is {list}.
