Working with your Colleagues to Effect Change

Wednesday 1:30pm-4:00pm Student Union: Fiesta A and B
Afternoon Mini Workshop

Convener

Cailin Huyck Orr, Carleton College

To institute InTeGrate principles at scales larger than a course, 16 institutional or cross-institutional teams across the country embarked on implementation efforts to use InTeGrate materials and approaches to reach programmatic goals including: recruiting and supporting diverse learners, teaching about the Earth across the curriculum, connecting geoscience to societal issues, preparing teachers to teach Earth Science, and supporting transfer between 2 year and 4 year programs and to the workforce. The teams have provided detailed information about what they did, why, and how it worked as a way of providing models for others interested in combining learning about the Earth with societal issues. In this workshop, learn about the challenges and successes of individual programs, common elements across programs, and how they set about making and supporting change.

In this workshop we will use the examples and lessons learned by the InTeGrate Implementation programs to help participants design a plan to support departmental/institutional change including aspects such as aligning effort with institutional priorities, making use of assets that already exist, and engaging other stakeholders in the efforts. Specific examples of how practices have been put into place at other institutions will be presented. Together we will explore these materials and consider how you can put this information into practice.

Please bring a laptop or tablet to the workshop.

Goals

At the end of this workshop, participants will have:

  • motivation to launch and sustain programmatic change
  • strategies for aligning effort with institutional priorities, making use of assets that already exist, and engaging other stakeholders in the efforts
  • greater familiarity with InTeGrate principles and resources
  • new colleagues engaged in this work
