Wave Reflection

Students can use these videos to learn how waves reflect from barriers. Slow motion videos of waves reflecting from fixed and free ends allow students to see which properties of the wave are affected by the reflection.

Instructor Note

When teaching with this video, direct students to the student video library, which provides student access to all videos without links to instructor materials and solutions.

Multiple videos of mechanical wave reflections in DMV Player Students can select a fixed or free end of the spring. Students can measure time using a stopwatch, and vertical and horizontal distances using rulers.

Teaching Materials

These videos can be used for students to develop the rules that govern wave reflection from fixed and free barriers. Students make observations and use these observations to learn which properties of waves change when a wave is reflected from a barrier. When a wave reflects from a fixed and free barrier, determine which wave properties change:
  • wave velocity
  • wave amplitude
  • wavelength
  • frequency
  • phase
