Sunrise over a coastal marsh

Coastal marshes and mangroves provide clean water, groundwater recharge, and act as natural buffers against storms, absorbing floodwaters and providing erosion control with vegetation that stabilizes shorelines and absorbs wave energy. If those habitats are degraded and/or destroyed, then adjacent inland communities will have less protection from sea level rise, and may experience more direct storm energy and flooding.
