Figure 1: Location maps and digital elevation models (DEMs) of the Central Coast Ranges of California and the Gabilan Mesa. The DEM covering the larger area illustrates the unique topography of the Gabilan Mesa (labeled “GM”), and the DEM covering the smaller area better illustrates the location of Pancho Rico Valley (labeled ”PRV”) relative to the Salinas Valley (labeled “SV”), the San Andreas Fault zone (labeled ”SAFZ”), and San Lorenzo Creek (labeled “SLC”). Sketches at right illustrate how drainage was rearranged by stream capture, which resulted in an increase in the size of the Pancho Rico Creek watershed.
