Histogram of old growth white spruce ages

View Original Image at Full Size

Histogram showing dates of germination (green bars) of white spruce growing in randomly selected study plots within the Kennicott Valley. The broad variety of germination dates contrasts with the narrow range of tree ages typically found in younger fires affected by frequent fires. This mixed age distribution describes an old growth white spruce forest, uncommon in Alaska but perhaps typical of forests next to the margins of large valley glaciers where persistent katabatic winds protect the forests in summertime from large fires.
