Hurricane/Tropical Cyclone Catarina is the only recorded hurricane to occur in the South Atlantic Ocean. Catarina made landfall on March 28, 2004 in the Santa Catarina state of Brazil as a Category 2 hurricane (Safir-Simpson Hurricane Scale) with estimated sustained winds around 100 mph.
