Selecting landing sites on Mars.

TRANSCRIPT: "Hi. I’m Matt Golombek. I’m a geologist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. That’s NASA’s Center for Planetary Exploration and I do research on Mars and mostly what I do is select landing sites on Mars for future landers and rovers. And this is a very interesting task because it involves targeting high resolution images from the orbiters around Mars now and gathering as much information as you can about those places to determine if they are both safe and scientifically interesting. I really enjoy working on Mars because it has this factor of exploration of finding out something new that you didn’t know before and finding out about a world that could have been similar to the Earth at a time when life got started here on Earth. The factor of targeting images to a place on Mars and getting those images and discovering them on that scale for the first time that anybody has ever seen them at that scale is that interesting aspect of discovery and learning something new about a place that you didn’t know before."
