University of Maryland Biological Sciences Program (bsci.umd.edu) is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral research associate to assist with an NSF-supported project to change the institutional culture of teaching and learning in the biological sciences. The candidate would be responsible for working with a learning community of approximately 20 faculty members from three Biological Sciences departments to develop and assess active learning teaching approaches in a four-course introductory biology sequence. The project has three complimentary foci: faculty professional development in the scholarship of teaching and learning, the use of linked activities across the four-course sequence to build coherent learning progressions, and student instruction in metacognition and learning to learn. The candidate is also expected to assist with project-level assessment, including conducting classroom observations and interviews, data management, and data analysis. The appointment is for one year with possible renewal for a second and third year contingent upon funding and satisfactory performance. Review of applications will begin October 10 and the ideal starting date is November 1, 2016.

The position requires a PhD in biology or biology education, familiarity with active learning pedagogies, and experience with statistical data analysis. Experience in education research is highly desirable. For more information and to apply, go to https://ejobs.umd.edu/postings/46066
