Activities and Examples Contribution Form

This is a new format for the contribution of teaching materials. This form is more in-depth than the old one, and the resulting collection will provide more information to users. It is not necessary to update existing activities that were submitted with the old form. However, if you would like to update an activity that you previously submitted, you are encourage to do so.

You retain all rights to your contributed work and are responsible for referencing other people's work and for obtaining permission to use any copyrighted material within your contribution. By contributing your work to this web site, you give On the Cutting Edge a license for non-commercial distribution of the material, provided that we attribute the material to you. This form and the file uploads must be completed in a single session. Leaving the page erases the data. You cannot submit a partially completed form and return to it later.

Description

Sample Description

This activity is a laboratory-style exercise that involves investigating the physical controls on viscosity by pouring different syrup mixtures down an inclined plane and using Jeffreys equation to calculate viscosity. Students time the syrup flows and then calculate viscosities. The four sets of experiments include examining the effects of temperature, dissolved water, solids and bubbles on syrup viscosity. Students then use Jeffreys equation to calculate the velocities of a variety of lava flow compositions. They also investigate the effects of composition, temperature, dissolved water and solids numerically using the freeware program MAGMA by K. Wohletz.
