Educational Resources for Teaching Petrology

Examining chromite horizons at the Stillwater mine

This collection of internet resources is intended to help faculty in teaching or designing petrology courses. Many of the resources are lecture notes or PowerPoint presentations that are illustrated with useful diagrams, graphs and figures. There are also course syllabi, petrology projects, and on-line galleries of photomicrographs.

Suggest a URL of an internet resource for this collection. These links may not necessarily have instructional activities associated with them, but they could support teaching of igneous and metamorphic petrology. Examples may include links to government agencies, professional societies, institutions, and include images, maps, databases, tools and reports.

Metamorphism of Calcareous and Ultramafic Rocks part of SERC Web Resource Collection

This 18-slide PowerPoint presentation describes metamorphism of calcareous rocks in terms of basic composition, SiO2, MgO, CaO ternary diagrams, and isobaric T-XCO2 and T-XH2O diagrams. The chapter ...

Intersecting Isograds at Whetstone Lake part of SERC Web Resource Collection

This 15-slide PowerPoint presentation takes the viewer through a real life investigation of metamorphic terrane consisting of pelitic and calcareous rocks. The investigation includes recognition of 5 ...

Thermodynamics part of SERC Web Resource Collection

This 37-slide PowerPoint presentation covers thermodynamics in metamorphic rocks. Gas phases are described in terms of gas pressure-volume relationships in light of the ideal gas law. T-X ...

Metamorphism of Pelitic Sediments part of SERC Web Resource Collection

This PowerPoint presentation includes 30 slides discussing metamorphism in pelitic rocks. The presentation uses AKF diagrams to describe Barrovian zones of metamorphism in metapelites. Metamorphism ...

Metamorphic Rock Textures part of SERC Web Resource Collection

These lecture notes discuss metamorphic textures and the mechanisms that create them. A discussion of foliation covers types of stress and the development of foliated rocks from slate to gneiss. Five ...

Triangular Plots in Metamorphic Petrology part of SERC Web Resource Collection

These lecture notes discuss the use of three component systems in metamorphic petrology. Common triangular plots used in metamorphic rocks are presented with annotated ternary diagrams. The ...

Metamorphic Mineral Assemblages part of SERC Web Resource Collection

This set of lecture notes covers factors affecting the mineral assemblages in metamorphic rocks. Topics covered include the phase rule in metamorphism, progressive (prograde) metamorphism, and ...

Regional Metamorphism part of SERC Web Resource Collection

These lecture notes provide several examples of regional metamorphism. The notes introduce Barrovian Facies metamorphism, using the classic example of the Dalradian and Moinian Series of Scotland. A ...

Metamorphic Fluids and Metasomatism part of SERC Web Resource Collection

This 33-slide PowerPoint presentation introduces metamorphic fluids and metasomatism. Topics covered include fluid speciation, solubility of chemical species, equilibrium of mineral species in zones, ...

Metamorphism: How pressure changes rock part of SERC Web Resource Collection

These lecture notes provide an introduction to metamorphic rocks. Topics include causes of metamorphism, mineral assemblages, phase transitions, foliation, metamorphic environments, and metamorphic ...
