Instrument Type

ELECTRON MICROBEAM - EMPA electron microprobe; wavelength dispersive spectrometers

ARL SEMQ with Advanced Microbeam software.

Application:

Typical Use:

Quantitative, microscopic chemical analysis of solid samples including minerals, alloys, ceramics, glasses, semiconductors, thin films, and particles.
0.01% detection limits routinely, 0.003% for some elements.
Six high selectivity wavelength dispersive spectrometers and one energy dispersive spectrometer allowing routine analysis of elements from Be-U.

Conditions for Use:

Submitted samples will be analyzed on a contract basis (i.e. lab personnel will do the work).
Visitors are invited to work in the lab to work with lab personnel.
Visitors are invited to work in the lab to design and do the work yourself.
Training Session (short course) is offered.

User Fees:

Contact Sreenivas Bhattiprolu (614 292 2272) for user fee.

Instrument Priorities:

Remote Use:

Sample Preparation:

Samples need to be flat polished thin sections or embedded in 1-inch or 1.25-inch mounts (bakelite or epoxy).

Standard Collections/Lab Blanks:

53 (most common) mineral standards are available to match the matrix of the sample for more accurate elemental analysis.

Software:

Advanced microbeam Probe for Windows.
EDAX for quick energy dispersive elemental analysis.

Educational Use:

Class demonstrations are available for undergraduates.
Class demonstrations are available for K-12.
Undergraduate student research projects are invited.
Graduate student research projects are invited.
Tutorials and other educational materials related to the lab are available.
