Application:

Typical Use:

Used for routine identification of crystalline phases in mixtures. Can take random packed mounts or oriented mounts (for clays). Sample size from 50mg up. MSI Jade and MacDiff software are routinely used for data analysis and preparation of publishable figures.

Conditions for Use:

Submitted samples will be analyzed on a contract basis (i.e. lab personnel will do the work).
Visitors are invited to work in the lab to work with lab personnel.
Visitors are invited to work in the lab to design and do the work yourself.
Training Session (short course) is offered.

User Fees:

Minimum of $10 user fee per sample in addition to any fees for UMKC personnel assisting with the analyses.

Instrument Priorities:

Priority given to class exercises and student research, but the instrument is not heavily used.

Remote Use:

No remote operation.

Sample Preparation:

For samples submitted for analysis, either a prepared powder (several grams preferred) or a representative piece of material to be pulverized (several grams) should be provided.

Standard Collections/Lab Blanks:

Instrument is aligned using a silicon standard provided by the manufacturer.

Software:

Acquisition software is by Rigaku. The data is then processed in MSI Jade. Data may also be exported to MacDiff for further processing, and exported from MacDiff (or from Jade) in other graphics and data formats.

Educational Use:

Class demonstrations are available for undergraduates.
Class demonstrations are available for K-12.
Undergraduate student research projects are invited.
Graduate student research projects are invited.
