New frontiers of discovery are continually being explored via the fields of mineralogy, petrology and geochemistry. The next generation of research opportunities in the geosciences identified by the NRC (2001) include: Earth and planetary materials, the "critical zone" where we live, geobiology, Earth's deep interior, continents, and planets--all of which are of key interest to the MPG disciplines.
Some additional recent examples include:
--nanotechnology, and characterization of nanoparticles;
--planetary exploration; characterization of Martian rocks and soils, meteorites, cosmic "star" dust, ...
--geomicrobiology, life in extreme environments,....
