Teaching the Ocean System: Resources for Educators

Servicing a buoy - not for the faint of heart

The science of oceanography may be as vast as the oceans themselves. The study of the world’s oceans has become increasingly important as we consider the earth as a system. The oceans play a pivotal role in climate, hold a rich array of life’s diversity, and are the setting for much of the earth’s active tectonic processes.

This web collection will help undergraduate faculty and students use a new approach to teaching and learning oceanography. Here we consider the use of models, datasets and visualizations in teaching. By integrating these emerging techniques into the classroom, students will be able to benefit from new developments in this exciting field.

Resources for the classroom, lab and field

These collections are in the early stages of development, so not all of them are accessible yet.
We are welcoming submissions of web sites, datasets and teaching activities.

2005 Workshop: Teaching the Ocean System

This workshop was held July 6 - 9, 2005 at the University of Washington in Seattle. The purpose of this workshop was to bring together leaders in the field to explore ways to effectively integrate exciting new scientific research and methods into undergraduate earth science courses.

See the entire workshop program, with links to each of the PowerPoint presentations given at the workshop.

One of the important results of the workshop will be contributions of teaching materials, insights on teaching methodology, and the development of classroom resources that take advantage of cutting edge technology. Stay tuned for updates on these topics after the workshop.
