Summary

This assignment has students reading current news items and communicating the content to the rest of the class. The assignment meets a college-wide goal of teaching communication and a class goal of the connection between geology and everyday life.

Communicating the information to the class using oral and graphical means.

Description of the activity/assignment

Students will have read appropriate section of text. In lab, each group of 3-4 students is given a short news article. They read and discuss the article within the group and then prepare a short presentation to the rest of the class.

Determining whether students have met the goals

The group is evaluated on the accuracy of information gleaned from article (number of "facts") and the quality of their presentation.
